Steven Soderbergh is one odd hombre…

I have no idea how to react to this trailer, other than to say I want to see this simply because even Soderbergh’s failures (Solaris) are more interesting than most films that get released these days. Does it look like the next Out of Sight or Traffic? Well…no. But both of those movies were artistically successful due more to the superlative work of their screenwriters (Scott Frank and Stephen Gaghan, respectively) than Soderbergh’s performance as a director.

Now, Sex, Lies & Videotape is all him. And that’s kind of what The Girlfriend Experience reminds me of. All that’s missing is Sandy Cohen’s eyebrows. And a leading lady who isn’t a porn star, but you can’t have everything, right?

A Three Stooges remake? That’s just crazy enough to…nah, it’ll suck.

You know how people say there are no new ideas in Hollywood? If the news that Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Jim Carrey will play The Three Stooges in a Farrelly brothers’ movie isn’t proof, I don’t know what is. Sweet Enola Gay, talk about awful. Just look at this picture, photoshopped nicely by Rope of Silicon:

In depressing times such as these, why does this make me feel even worse?

I like your book, but your movie might blow goats…

Eh. I read this book about a year ago and was, if not impressed, at least satisfied. That said, the main appeal of the book was the narration, which doesn’t appear to translate to the screen version. Rare is the movie that captures the spirit of a book’s narration. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are Alexander Payne’s Election and Todd Field’s Little Children. It’s probably no coincidence that both are adaptations of Tom Perrotta works.

All the more reason to be excited about the movie version of The Abstinence Teacher, which is helmed by the directors of Little Miss Sunshine. It hits theaters next year. A Best Adapted Screenplay nomination should be a lock.

He goes by “The Orson Welles of crap”

I dare you to watch this trailer for the independent (comedy? drama? uproariously funny car wreck?) film The Room and not find yourself wanting to create a drinking game. I don’t know if that guy’s trying to pull off an accent or mild retardation, but either way it’s hilarious. I can’t lie, I’m DYING to see this movie. Not since Ed Wood was alive and churning out scrod after scrod (and dressing in drag) has horrible cinema looked this good.

“I’m gonna rob these white guys”

If you’re at all a fan of documentaries (and you should be) or boxing, you’ve probably heard about James Toback’s Tyson, which hits theaters April 24. Judging from this first trailer – and a slew of early critical raves – Tyson looks to be a raw, uncensored trip into the mind of Iron Mike Tyson. I can’t see how it plays out like anything other than a tragedy.
