Big blue knob aside, Watchmen’s 78% plunge from last weekend’s opening salvo is saddening. While I didn’t think Zack Snyder’s agonizingly faithful adaptation was a masterpiece like some, I thought it was visually and narratively compelling, a rare feat nowadays. With a likely take of $14-15 million this weekend, Watchmen may struggle to reach $100 million domestic. In other words, it’ll be seen as a failure. And in the copycat world of Hollywood, its perception as an underperformer means studios will be less inclined to take a creative risk like Watchmen in the future.
And that, frankly, sucks.
